Victoria Schultz MIS 260 B. Hecker Are We Ready For Cyberwarfare? 1. Cyberwarfare refers to politically motivated hacking to conduct sabotage and espionage. It is a form of information warfare sometimes seen as analogous to conventional warfare, and in 2013 was, for the first time, considered a larger threat than Al Qaeda or terrorism, by many U. S. intelligence officials. 2. U. S. government security expert Richard A. Clarke, in his book Cyber War (May 2010), defines â€Å"cyberwarfare† as â€Å"actions by a nation-state to penetrate another nation's computers or networks for the purposes of causing damage or disruption. The Economist describes cyberspace as â€Å"the fifth domain of warfare,† and William J. Lynn, U. S. Deputy Secretary of Defense, states that â€Å"as a doctrinal matter, the Pentagon has formally recognized cyberspace as a new domain in warfare . . . [which] has become just as critical to military operations as land, sea, air, and space. † 3. In 2009, President Barack Obama declared America's digital infrastructure to be a â€Å"strategic national asset,† and in May 2010 the Pentagon set up its new U. S. Cyber Command, headed by General Keith B.Alexander, director of the National Security Agency (NSA), to defend American military networks and attack other countries' systems. The EU has set up ENISA (European Network and Information Security Agency) which is headed by Prof. Udo Helmbrecht and there are now further plans to significantly expand ENISA's capabilities. The United Kingdom has also set up a cyber-security and â€Å"operations centre† based in Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), the British equivalent of the NSA. In the U. S. owever, Cyber Command is only set up to protect the military, whereas the government and corporate infrastructures are primarily the responsibility respectively of the Department of Homeland Security and private companies. In February 2010, top American lawmakers wa rned that the â€Å"threat of a crippling attack on telecommunications and computer networks was sharply on the rise. â€Å"According to The Lipman Report, numerous key sectors of the U. S. economy along with that of other nations, are currently at risk, including yber threats to public and private facilities, banking and finance, transportation, manufacturing, medical, education and government, all of which are now dependent on computers for daily operations. In 2009, President Obama stated that â€Å"cyber intruders have probed our electrical grids. † 4. The Economist writes that China has plans of â€Å"winning informationised wars by the mid-21st century†. They note that other countries are likewise organizing for cyberwar, among them Russia, Israel and North Korea. Iran boasts of having the world's second-largest cyber-army.James Gosler, a government cybersecurity specialist, worries that the U. S. has a severe shortage of computer security specialists, estimati ng that there are only about 1,000 qualified people in the country today, but needs a force of 20,000 to 30,000 skilled experts. At the July 2010 Black Hat computer security conference, Michael Hayden, former deputy director of national intelligence, challenged thousands of attendees to help devise ways to â€Å"reshape the Internet's security architecture†, explaining, â€Å"You guys made the cyberworld look like the north German plain. â€Å"

Prescriber information

The doctor's name, address and phone number should be clearly written (or preprinted) on the top of the prescription form. Some states require the doctor's state license number to be on the form. It is not recommended that you preprint your Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number on the prescription pad. It becomes too easy for drug abusers to lift a few prescription forms for illicit use if that number is easily available.The DEA number is not required on noncontrolled prescriptions; however, many pharmacies may equest the DEA number with a prescription to help when filing the patient's medication insurance claims. For those who do not use their DEA number: Prescriptions are often counted by the DEA number. If that number is not used on prescriptions written by optometrists, the count will not reflect an accurate number of prescriptions coming from our profession. This will affect the support optometry receives from pharmaceutical companies in terms of service, educational prog ram support and involvement in pharmaceutical clinical trials. . Patient information: This portion of the prescription should include at least the first and last name of the atient and the age of the patient. Many names such as â€Å"Smith† and â€Å"Jones† should include the complete name and address to help distinguish patients with similar names. An address is required on schedule II controlled drugs and should be included on prescriptions for any controlled substance. When the exact age is unavailable the word â€Å"adult† may be used in the age slot. Children and the elderly may need the weight listed when oral medications are prescribed. 3.Date prescribed: The date is part of the legal document confirming when the prescription was written. Pharmacists are often presented prescriptions with dates that are well ast the prescribing date. Some patients elect to save prescriptions for future use. This often includes antihistamines and antibiotics that may not b e indicated or are even dangerous for the patient's present condition. 4. Superscription: This is the Rx symbol on the prescription form that designates the written document to be a prescription. Rx is an abbreviation for a Latin phrase that means â€Å"take thou. 5. Inscription: An inscription includes the drug name, concentration and type of preparation. Drug names should not be abbreviated and correct spelling is important to assure that the correct medication is dispensed. Maxitrol (neomycin and polymyxin b sulfates and dexamethasone, Alcon) and Tobra Dex (tobramycin and dexamethasone, Alcon) are examples of drugs that are prepared in ointment (ung) or drop (gt) form. Cortisporin (neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates, bacitracin zinc and hydrocortisone, Glaxo Wellcome) comes in ophthalmic and otic (ear drops) preparations.Specify which preparation you wish the patient to use. Drug names can be written using the chemical name, such as ciprofloxacin 0. 3% (Ciloxan, Alcon) or the pro prietary form that requests a specific brand name drug. This preparation is still nder patent, so if you use either name the pharmacy will provide the product manufactured by Alcon. Tobramycin has recently come off patent. If you prescribe â€Å"Tobrex† the patient should receive the drug manufactured by Alcon unless you â€Å"tobramycin,† the patient will likely receive the generic form of the drug.Homatropine and pilocarpine come in different concentrations. It is good practice to always specify the concentration, even if the drug comes in only one concentration. That drug may come in other concentrations in the future. Concentration and preparation form should be written Just to the right of the drug name. Use the metric system of weights and measures. To avoid misinterpretation of the preparation strength, follow this standard in writing percentages: If the percent is less than one, always precede the decimal with a zero, such as 0. 1% or 0. 05%.

If those on the higher end of the work spectrum fail to adapt and learn, those from below have the opportunity to move up and replace them; here is where fear becomes the motivating force, and its presence is counterproductive for all concerned. The most famous motivation theories, upon which nearly all current theories are based, originate from four theorists: Sigmund Freud (Theory X), A. H. Maslow Theory Y), Douglas McGregor (Theory XY) and William Ouichi (Theory Z). Surfing, along with other sports, provides concrete examples of cultural differences based on variations between regions (Delaney and Madigan 2009: 62). The surf lingo between Australia, Hawaii, and California, for example, are quite different. Local surfers also approach competition differently and have different preferences regarding anything from wave type to the surfboard they like to use. The rise of competitions in places such as Australia and California also sparked the development of surf sub-cultures. Although they are all based upon original Hawaiian surf traditions, these cultures became much more localized and accessible to those who were not from the Polynesian islands, but still wished to partake in the world of surfing and embrace the surfing lifestyle (Goggans and DiFranco 2004: 434). So what, exactly, is the average surfer’s lifestyle and what is surf culture? According to Mike Doyle who was voted as 1964’s and 1965’s Best Surfer in Surfer Magazine, won the Duke Kahanamoku Classic in 1969, and who placed first in Peru at the 1970 World Championships it is about surfing to live and living to surf (California Surf Museum 2010). Doyle’s life is the quintessential surfer’s lifestyle, living as â€Å"†¦a super-athlete with a clear mind and a deep appreciation for nature and the elements†¦ True to his nature, [he has built] a new tree-house to sleep in. When people question, ‘When are you going to grow up? ’ he considers it verification that his perfect lifestyle is still intact† (California Surf Museum†. Surf culture essentially counterbalances the lifestyle of fast-paced business, big cities, and the stresses of everyday life. It has even developed its own category of relaxed fashion, with flip flops and board shorts becoming the iconic surf wardrobe (Lanagan 2002: 284). Consider what is required to be a surfer a board and a few good waves. Compared to the rest of the world, it is extremely minimal; and if one were to make a living as a professional surfer, it is evident that they would not face the same day to day conflicts and sources of anxiety as the average person. Surfers are not known as being wealthy; but with their appreciation for nature as opposed to fancy cars and houses, perhaps it is the simplicity of their lifestyle that enables them to live such peaceful and happy lives. Although living life as a surfer can be quite peaceful, surf culture is still built upon the concept of extreme sports. Extreme sports â€Å"†¦involve pitting oneself against the elements of one’s environment, whether natural or architectural. Their appeal derives from reintroducing and then individually confronting risk, the dangers of personal injury being chiefly mitigated by honing physical skills and mental preparation† (Laviolette 2007: 1). The fact that the surf lifestyle may be virtually stress-free does not negate the risks associated with the sport; and these risks are often the most appealing aspect of surfing. To surf, in theory, is to tame the ocean’s waves with nothing but a surfboard and one’s own body. The idea that the ocean, as vast and powerful as it is, could be ridden upon with a board is very intoxicating. Aside from drowning, there are other risks such as jellyfish or sharks, even though they are relatively rare. Rocky cliffs and coral reefs also present some danger of injury, especially if a surfer is thrown into a reef or cliff by a strong wave. Still, the ability to put oneself into a risky situation and come out unharmed can be extremely thrilling for some, which is why it is not uncommon for advanced surfers to seek out enormous waves near rocky cliffs (Waitt 2008: 81). The mental thrill that one gets when surfing, therefore, far outweighs any risks that they may face by partaking in this sport.

Although often interpreted differently by individuals, legal rights, human rights and the jury system are essential features of the legal system. Nielsen believes that the main purpose of rights is to protect individuals, while Hajjar portrays the objective of the legal system as recognizing and respecting certain inherent human rights. Further, Dooley understands the jury system as essential for ensuring a democratic and fair trial procedure. As rights and the jury system are viewed according to these varying objectives, it seems there is a general assumption that the legal system is intended to protect individuals from the power of the government. However, individuals’ abstract idea of how the law works can be contrary to the actual workings of the legal system. Rights and the jury system create the expectation in people that they will be protected from the power of the government, and yet these expectations often remain unfulfilled, creating a disconnect between the idea of protection and the reality of the legal system. In her article â€Å"The Work of Rights and the Work Rights Do,† Laura Beth Nielsen asserts that â€Å"legal rights are important for protecting individual autonomy and resisting the arbitrary or tyrannical imposition of state power† (Nielsen 63). In the case of traditionally disadvantaged groups, rights have provided a sense of power as a direct result of their nature. Nielsen explains, â€Å"’Rights’ are said to apply equally to everyone, they are ‘neutral,’ and are backed by the legitimate authority of law and the state,† and that â€Å"Rights are often thought of as naturally inhering in persons† (66, 68). Life is concentrated, however, in about four percent of it, and it is this four percent that is being polluted by the tons every day. Everyone needs to understand that the oceans are not endless, and not bottomless. They also much see that the ocean contains much marine life which are essential to our eco-system. And in order to preserve this other world of life, we must stop polluting the oceans, and begin to clean them up. Although using the ocean for a toxic waste dump may provide for a cheap alternative, we must not succumb to these barbaric urges. If we neglect to deal with these ideals, than the world as we know it may not be as great a world for our children as it was for us.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  First, we need to understand that the oceans are not the vast resources that we believe them to be, but just vulnerable natural resources. Before Columbus' day, the ocean were thought to be boundless. Although Columbus proved this theory incorrect, the thought still remains in today's societies. â€Å"For we of the 20th century still treat the ocean as the endless, bottomless pit it was considered to be in medieval times.†(Heyerdahl) The majority of the world's population still lives under the misconception that the ocean is a hungry abyss, eager to devour all their waste. These beliefs, however, are all untrue. The average depth of the oceans is only a little more than a mile, when in fact, some lakes exceed this depth rather handily. Although the size of the ocean is often pondered, the thought that it may one day be gone, is never even considered.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The vast majority of all life in the ocean, inhabits only 1/25 of these waters, but it is these surroundings that are in the most danger. In the beginning of the world, marine plankton was vital to the evolution of man. Today, it is even more important to us, being that it provides us with a great percentage of oxygen we receive. â€Å"These minute plant species manufactured so much oxygen that it rose above the surface to help form the atmosphere we have today.†(Heyerdahl) With the disappearance of the plankton through increased pollution, the obvious result will be a total deprivation of our oxygen supply, in turn limiting all people to certain limits. And with urban expansion leading to deforestation, our dependence upon marine life becomes heightened. The importance of marine plankton cannot be emphasized enough, yet most people fail to recognize it as the vital life supply it is.

Malcolm X Essay

Comparing the vocabularies of â€Å"Idiot Nation† and â€Å"Learning to Read†, I came out with the result that, Moores had used relatively critical words and vigorous words to write the passage. The way he narrated was rather extreme, he used words such as †idiots† and â€Å"stupidity† to insult the educational system in U. S. A. His tone was rather extreme and furious. He had even bolded some of the words in order to exaggerate his tone. In the other hand, Malcolm had used his own experience as the root of writing. The passage is to me more persuasive, since he had his own perspective and angles. Although the way Moores wrote could create a more remarkable impression, â€Å"Learning to Read† is more appealing to me since it doesn’t seem to strong and extreme. CORE QUESTIONS 4. Malcolm’s self-education in the prison assisted his later achievement on the society such as became a disciple of Elijah Muhammad and finding the Nation of Islam. Since then, they have been discussing problems regarding human rights. From an article I have read, it had mentioned about â€Å"all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world†. This was the ultimate aim of the organization. So the establishment of United Nation was a leap of gaining human rights for the Africans. However, African American was a missing element. However, the establishment of United Nation did not support a permanent right for the African. Regarding a news[2](refer to the reference on page 4) in 2010, the equality of Africans was still a controversial problem, and had not been tackled. So what I could say is that, I am not sure whether the assumption Malcolm had made was right or not. 8. After reading the passage of Malcolm, I think he has discontent feelings towards the white men. Although his passage was titles â€Å"learning to read†, he had only spent a few paragraphs describing the progress of his learning, nevertheless almost half of the passage using historical examples to criticize the white men of using their power brainwashing the people. He thought the white men had taken away the human right of the black men. However, I think it was understandable for him to have these kinds of thoughts, since he had received a several unfair treatments from the white people when he was younger, so the white people gave him a bad impression initially. As he represented the NOI (Nation of Islam), he had to criticize the white people, in order to persuade and gain supports from the black races who were under a very bad condition. 9. I think in certain extent it’s possible to empower the students in the way Malcolm X’s self-education. Firstly, the situation of Malcolm is a very rare case. He was in prison for 7 years. That is probably the reason he can self- educate. He had so much time in the prison, no temptation and without connecting the world. He had much time copying words from the dictionary, while the students in the modern world had to face different kind of problems in daily life, they would not have time copying the dictionary every day. However, I think the students could use part of Malcolm’s method to educate themselves by squeezing out a little time and memorizing some of the vocabularies every day, but not using the method as extreme as Malcolm’s. 10. I think the overall message of the passage was not solely bringing out the effectiveness of reading books; instead Malcolm wanted also to bring out the problem of black races being suppressed by the white men. In the passage, Malcolm had pointed out the history was being â€Å"whitening†, which means the history was written by the white men. The examples he had raised up were all against the white races. That was the point I realized his passage was not purely like the topic â€Å"Learning to read†. CLOSING QUESTION 11. The book â€Å"Happiness† has inspired me the most. This book taught me the right attitude I should have towards life. It gave me so much positive energy. People used to be so happy and care-free when we were younger, however, when people were growing up, they started to have many unnecessary worries. This book urged me to reflect myself, and give me more motivation and wisdom to treat daily life problems. â€Å"Learning to read† gave me a brand new perspective. I am not person with critical thinking. When I was younger, I have studied the history of Europe, and I used to believe most of them. This passage reminded me that the history were all written by the white races, which means they could actually â€Å"create† history in the way which benefited them. I used to think history are what people in the past have written and could not be doubt, since no one could go back to the past and prove what had really happened. Nevertheless, now I think history could have a possibility of fakeness, and could not be completely believed. 12. Malcolm X to me was a very tough and smart person. I admired his attitude in the prison. Most of the people would have blamed themselves of getting in the jail and might have given their hopes after they went to the jail, however, Malcolm educated himself in the jail, even harder than the normal people. This kind of faith and spirit is very meritorious. He later even made great achievement on fighting for the right of the black race. However, when reading his passage, I could not completely agree his perspective, there might be biases.
